Underway Again: Thoughts from a Coastie

The wife is often sharing tips and tricks about deployments and how to handle them as a military spouse. We rarely show you what it's like from the military member's point of view though. Today, we thought we'd give you a glimpse into the thoughts of the Coastie Husband in regards to deployments.

Underway again

The thought makes me feel a bit like waiting on the gallows. Not in the sense that I'm going to die, but more in the sense that I will once again vanish from the people I swore to protect. Going to recover poison that is shipped into the country by the ton is an honorable goal to be sure, but like making an appointment to go to the dentist, hard times are ahead and there is nothing you can do about it.

So, once again, my wife becomes a pen pal. Socialization gives way to broken language barriers and the same repetitive conversations that resonate through the ship like ripples in a small pond. All who swear to protect the people of the United States make sacrifices. Our jobs, no matter the branch, are inherently risky, and we separate ourselves from the people we swore to protect to take the risks necessary.

When I stare down the barrel of another patrol, I am consoled by the knowledge that the sacrifice I am about to make is for those that I love. All I ask from you is that you keep America great while I'm gone.
