Natural Beauty of Wisconsin

I’d like to thank The Coastie Couple for a chance to be a guest blogger for their tour of the 50 states.  I have lived all my life in Wisconsin and I wanted to share some of the great things about my home state.  As a nature photographer I love the fact that we have 4 seasons and so many opportunities to enjoy nature at its greatest.  I wanted to share some of my favorite locations that offer plenty of wildlife photography opportunities.

The Mead/McMillian Marsh Wildlife areas offer 33,000 acres of wetlands, forests and grasslands to explore.  Located in the middle of the state, near Marshfield, it is well worth the trip to visit them.  One of my favorite subjects is the Great Blue Heron and sightings at the Mead are frequent making it fun to visit in different seasons and times of day.

Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is another fantastic area to visit.  Be sure to stop in the visitor center where they have displays of the different type of wildlife you are going to see along their trails and a knowledgeable staff to answer questions. Then take your pick of what direction you want to head, see the Whooping Cranes from the  viewing tower or head to the prairies to see one of the largest population of the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.

There are many wildlife protection groups as well that offer public events where you can learn more about the wildlife of Wisconsin. One of my favorite groups is REGI which is the Raptor Education Group Inc.  They rehabilitate these incredible creatures and release them back into the wild. I was able to experience an Eagle Release in Sauk City where we were able to see them up close and then watch as they took flight and returned to their home.

Wisconsin even has Rustic Roads that you experience as you are driving through Wisconsin.  There are 117 designated Rustic Roads that cover more than 669 miles. Fall is a great time to tour these scenic routes, where you can enjoy the leaves changing colors.

I invite you to visit Wisconsin and enjoy the different wildlife, landscapes and season that we have to offer.
